“To Dream” was intended to be part of the Urban Arts Council’s “Jingle on Downtown” exhibit which began December 13th, 2004 and ended January 10th, 2005. The first manifestation of this work was in the classroom. It was because of this temporary installation that I wish to display this work in a gallery setting. The polyethylene leaves were pinned together around the waist and the train swept to the wall behind.
All of those pins were removed and leaves re-positioned for the piece downtown at 77 S. Main. For the piece as installed downtown, the lights underneath the cotton snow blink white to catch the attention of passers by.
I was inspired by Sandy Skoglund when thinking about hanging the leaves and pinning them to the walls. It was the change of the seasons and the beautiful orange and red falling leaves that really inspired me to make this piece. However, I truly love the juxtapositions I have created within the work. The piece brings to mind snow, but the piece is meant to mimic leaves. True leaves are biodegradable, but the ones I have created are not.
It was important for me to utilize the space, so instead of attempting to re-create exactly as the piece was originally, I built up the skirt and had it flow to areas of the wall and stand away from the implied body underneath.
